RSS: Full Articles or Summaries?

There's been a lot of discussion lately on the subject of providing either a summary or the entire aritcle in an RSS feed.

The latest opinion in the ~~battle~~ discussion comes from Stoney deGeyter who (like Runstream) believes that the entire article is best. Why?

He says:

"Countless times, after reading a summary, I've been on the edge. I think I'm interested, but not entirely sure. Do I click or do I keep scanning available blog posts. Sometimes I opt for the former, wishing I opted for the latter. Now, more times than not, now, I opt for the latter. If the summary isn't entirely convincing I won't click."

What do you think?

Reasons why RSS is good for Users:

Users benefit from better information control and efficiency.

Permission based.

Easy opt-in, and opt-out process.

No inbox clutter.

Enhances productivity.

Enhances organization of files.

RSS is spam/virus proof.

No more clogged email servers (or harddrives).

No more duplicate messages (for the most part).

NEW FEATURE: Categories

We slid in a new feature this week which you may or may not have already stumbled upon. In an effort to help others identify your feed, we have implemented Categories.

The way it works is simple - when you create a new feed you will now see a list of choices for Categories. Pick the one that applies the best to your feed. Some Categories have Sub-Categories which go even further to determining your content. So for instance, if you choose "Business" as your Category, you may then select "Investing" as a Sub-Category. Easy!

What if I already created a feed?
No problem...simply 'edit' your feed and add the Categories now.

Runstream Maintenance 9/2/07-9/3/07

With the sudden growth of Runstream, we have outgrown our current home. So, we're moving to a more powerful environment - one that can support the demainding needs of our users. We are well awawre of this situation and on top of it!

We're hoping that the holiday weekend here is a good time to make the migration to our new server space and have the least impact on you.

Runstream asks that if you don't have to make changes to your feed during the next 24 hours that you please hold off. We will have a backup of the database so this is more of a precautionary measure. After all, your feeds are valuable and we treat them as our own.

You shouldn't experience any downtime on the Runstream website, so feel free to access the site, view analytics as normal. It's more about publishing new articles that we ask you to refrain from during the mitgration.

We apologize for any inconvenice this may cause but trust us, it's going to be worth it ;)

I know it's been a couple days since we last posted and for good reason!! We're busy getting ready to make some site improvements which we think will make RunStream even better!

My next post will go into more detail about things to come. In the meanwhile I wanted to share another great post from Dosh Dosh about "Understanding how RSS feeds can help you" - this one includes a very well crafted video explaining how RSS works. I know our last post was from this same site and I hate to go to the same trough twice in a row, however "when you've got it - you've got it". These guys have it!
